A Simple Prescription for Good Health

Want the bottom-line prescription for good health?  Cut down on all food products made with any kind of flour and sugar.

According to best-selling author Andrew Weil, M.D. and founder/director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, sugar and processed carbohydrates are the primary culprits in the obesity epidemic. This is just one of the premises explored in his new book, Why Our Health Matters.

Weil emphasizes the importance of focusing on what you eat as much as how much you eat.  Health comes from eating the right amount of good foods and including exercise in your routine.Grocery Cart

With added sugars and refined carbohydrates jam-packed into every product, what can we do? When shopping, try to fill your cart with vegetables and lean meats.  Stick to the outside aisles of the grocery store, because that is where you will find the unprocessed foods.

Your Milwaukee Adventure Boot Camp Success Plan

Our boot camp coaches weigh in on how you can slim down and get fit.

Step 1…Bare it.

Stepping on the scale, even shirtless, can make you face how far off track you have fallen. Strip down and get on the scale once a week. Remember, during boot camp you can swell so your biggest weight loss will be 3-4 days after the last day of camp.

Step 2…Weigh your food, too.

A lot of people aren’t aware of how many calories they are putting into their mouths and can’t understand why they are gaining weight. The biggest culprit? Huge portions. Use a food scale until you can judge proper serving sizes. (Psst – after awhile, portions will get bigger again…so don’t sell your food scale)

Step 3…Shop like Catherine.

Clear your cupboards of the stuff you can’t resist (for Catherine, that is peanut butter?), and stock up on fruit, almond milk, brown rice, beans, oatmeal and high-fiber cereal. Step 4… Try an advanced camp.

Even just one Saturday can jump-start your workout motivation. Change it up with different locations and different coaches.  Each site has unique challenges and each coach has a unique style. And if you like stairs, make sure to take the Advanced Camp that is offered at Concordia University.
