Fight Fatigue!

Tired lionessphoto © 2007 Tambako The Jaguar | more info (via: Wylio)Yes, it is that time of year. There are so many demands on your time and energy. Feeling fatigued? Try some of these simple steps to amp up your energy!

1. Eat a healthy breakfast to stabilize your blood sugar and create sustainable energy. You’ll benefit both mentally and physically from eating a well-balanced morning meal with complex carbs, protein and healthy fats.

2. Get moving. Aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise every day to fight fatigue and keep your energy levels up. Even on days when you drag yourself to boot camp or small group… do you notice how after you have more energy? If you are seriously tired prior to a workout, bring it down a notch. You will still feel a boost in energy!

3. Eat at regular intervals. Fuel your body every three to four hours with fruits and vegetables, fiber and lean protein.

4. Sleep well. Get at least 7 hours of sleep a night (8 hours is even better). If you are severely sleep deprived we recommend that you skip that morning workout and get a few extra hours in. It will benefit you in the long run.

5. Drink plenty of water to avoid fatigue caused by dehydration. Drink at least 8 glasses a day. If you wait until you’re thirsty, you’ve waited too long. We would like to see everyone drinking at least a gallon.

6. Lose extra body weight. Being overweight can make you feel sluggish. Break the cycle and drop those pounds by eating right and getting plenty of exercise. (Avoid extreme dieting or you may have even less energy.)

7. Don’t depend on caffeine for energy – limit it to a cup or two of coffee (better yet – green tea) in the morning. Drinking large amounts of caffeine can lead to an energy crash-and-burn. If you’re used to drinking a lot of caffeine, slowly cut back to a healthier level.

8. Have fun. Do something you enjoy every day and make socializing with friends a priority.

9. Get some fresh air and sunshine on your face. If you’re stuck inside all day at work, especially if you have no windows, be sure to step outside a couple of times a day for an energizing dose of fresh air and sunlight. Take a walk outside to maximize the energy boost. Yes, that even means in this lovely weather we are having.

10. Make positive changes in your life. Break unhealthy habits like smoking and eating fried foods. Let go of grudges and resentment towards others – those feelings are exhausting. Organize your home or office and get rid of energy-zapping clutter. Pick up a new hobby or sport. Enjoy living.
